Architects Andrew Manahan and Tenzin Phuntsok have been selected to design and build Elliott Earls Lake Leelanau studio. In October 2010, the Cranbrook Academy of Art Graduate Architecture Department held a competition to design and build a studio on northern Michigan's Lake Leelanau for Elliott Earls. The competition was initiated by Elliott Earls and led by Architect-in-Residence William Massie. The studio is currently being built inside the Cranbrook Architecture department and will be craned into position on the site in May.

The studio is being constructed inside the Cranbrook Academy of Art Architecture building using advanced manufacturing techniques first pioneered by Cranbrook Architect-In-Residence William Massie. A number of these techniques were developed by Bill during the design and construction of his American House 08. Drew and Tenzin are leveraging Bills' considerable expertise to develop their own program, the evidence of which is this studio.

Earls Studio on Grounds

Late last night the studio was disassembled and moved from the Cranbrook Architecture studio to just below the reflecting pools. Prior to installation on Lake Leelanau, the studio will be installed on Cranbrook's grounds for the opening of the 2011 Graduate Degree Show at Cranbrook Museum. The show opens in in nine days. In the photograph above note the exterior cladding has been changed from the design proposal. The building is to be clad in galvanized corrugated steel rather than cedar shingle.
