Horst Schicklegrüber and the Barbecue Army
From September 11th to the Olympic Park bombings in Atlanta, one of the most fascinating and yet potentially divisive elements of contemporary life is the rise of fundamentalist theology. The paradoxical advocacy of violence by religious extremists as a means of addressing the perceived spiritual corruption within society would be funny if it weren't so horrifying. Among many other things, The Saranay Motel attempts to deal with these issues.
Integrated into the conceptual fabric of The Saranay Motel is the notion of blank parody. One of the many methods employed to this end is the creation of supporting histories for the characters in the film. In the film Ries Straver and Joshua-Ray Stephens play Horst Schicklegrüber and Les Griffin, two of America's preeminent doom metal musicians. Horst Schicklegrüber and the Barbecue Army are a fundamentalist rock band and aspiring political action group. Writing and producing under the guise of The BBQ Army, Elliott Earls collaborated with Joshua-Ray Stephens to craft a number of speed metal compositions specifically for The Saranay Motel score.
The songs produced for Tyran-O-Coitus Rex along with the songs from The Sessions at Christ Church Cranbrook serve as a kind of musical backbone for the The Saranay Motel score.
